MTH1W (MATH) Mathematics, Grade 9, Open Level Curriculum Policy Mathematics, The Ontario Curriculum, Grade 9, 2021
Course description: This course supports students in building on and deepening their understanding of key mathematical concepts, including number sense and operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data analysis, probability, and financial literacy. Students will engage in mathematical processes, modeling, and coding to interpret and apply their learning to real-world scenarios that are culturally relevant and meaningful. They will further develop skills in mathematical reasoning—such as proportional, spatial, and algebraic reasoning—as they work through problems and effectively communicate their thought processes.
Chapters and Descriptions:
Numbers In this unit, students will deepen their understanding of fractions, ratios, rates, proportions, and various number sets, while also learning the rules for working with exponents. They’ll explore abstract mathematical ideas, such as infinite sets and patterns approaching limits.
Algebra and Coding This unit introduces foundational concepts for working with linear relationships. Students will examine the properties of both linear and non-linear relationships, explore different ways to represent linear relationships, and solve a variety of theoretical and practical problems. Algebraic concepts will also be linked to coding, as students learn to read and write pseudocode, using comparative statements and loops to solve real-life problems.
Geometry and Measurement Students will explore various measurement systems and learn the factor label method for converting between units. They’ll investigate geometric relationships, including comparisons of volume among pyramids and prisms, as well as cones and cylinders.
Data Building on their knowledge of data collection and analysis, students will work toward a project where they design and conduct a survey, then analyze the results. They will create a mathematical model to represent their data and test its accuracy.
Financial Literacy In this unit, students will expand their understanding of compound interest and explore concepts of appreciation and depreciation within a Canadian context. They’ll also learn strategies for adapting a budget to accommodate moderate changes in financial circumstances.
