For example, starting with 12: the digit sum of 12 is 3, so the next term is 15. The digit sum of 15 is 6, so the next term is 21. 

If a Waverly sequence starts at 23, what is the 4th term? Working it through: 23 has digit sum 5, giving 28. 28 has digit sum 10, giving 38. 38 has digit sum 11, giving 49. The 4th term is 49. Notice the question invents a rule on the spot and tests whether a student can apply it correctly several times in a row, exactly the kind of reasoning Part C rewards.
