English Tutoring by Grade

We tutor English from Grade 9 through the Grade 12 university-preparation course, following the Ontario curriculum your child is actually being taught.

Grade 9

De-Streamed English

Grade 9 English is a de-streamed course, so students with different reading and writing levels share one class. Sessions build reading strategies and move writing from single paragraphs to full essays, with practice in explaining what a text means.

ENL1W Essay Writing
Grade 10

Academic English

Students read texts more closely and write more developed essays. Tutors help them plan an argument, support it with evidence and edit their own drafts, and feedback on each draft shows where marks are being lost.

ENG2D Text Analysis Media Studies
Grade 11

University Preparation English

The course where literary analysis and advanced writing become the main skills. Tutors also help students plan and revise essays before they are due, because gaps left here carry straight into Grade 12.

ENG3U Literary Analysis Advanced Writing
Grade 12

University Preparation English

The final English course of high school. Sessions cover literary analysis, essay writing and advanced writing, and earlier gaps are fixed first so the course feels manageable.

ENG4U Essay Writing Advanced Writing
Grades 9–12

Media Studies

Analysing advertising, news and film is its own skill. Tutors walk students through it step by step. New to the topic? Read what you learn in media studies.

Media Literacy Analysis

The Ontario English pathway: ENL1W → ENG2D → ENG3U → ENG4U. Each course builds on the one before it, so a weak spot in essay writing in Grade 9 can resurface in Grade 12. We work backwards to fix the cause, not just the current assignment. See all subjects and tutoring formats.

Where Ontario Students Actually Get Stuck

The same parts of Ontario English cause trouble year after year. Knowing where the trouble starts is most of the work.

Grade 9, from paragraphs to full essays

ENL1W is where many students first write a full essay. Organising ideas across several paragraphs is a new skill, and marks drop when the structure is missing. Tutors show how an introduction, body and conclusion fit together.

Thesis statements that say too little

A thesis that only names the topic leaves the essay with nothing to prove. Tutors teach students to state a clear position, then build every paragraph to support it.

Using quotes and evidence in literary analysis

Students often choose a good quotation and then forget to explain it. Strong analysis shows what the quote reveals about character, theme or the author's choices, and how it supports the thesis.

Reading unfamiliar texts under time pressure

Tests and exams often use passages students have never seen. Practising how to annotate, find the main idea and manage the clock makes unseen texts less stressful and the answers more focused.

Media studies and media literacy

Analysing advertising, news and film means asking who made a message, for whom, and why. Students who have mostly studied novels can need that way of reading explained step by step.

Editing your own writing

A strong draft can still lose marks to repeated errors. Tutors teach a second pass for grammar, punctuation and flow instead of relying on spell-check alone, so the final version reads clearly.

How English Tutoring Works

Sessions are built around the student's own coursework, not a separate curriculum they have to learn alongside school.

1

Create a profile and tell us the course

Share the grade, the course code (for example ENG3U) and what has been difficult lately. The more specific the starting point, the faster the first session becomes useful.

2

Get matched with an English tutor

Our matching process pairs students with a tutor suited to their grade, course and learning style. You can also browse tutor profiles and choose directly.

3

Bring your own work to the session

Essay drafts, novel-study questions, assignments, past tests — sessions follow what the student is being marked on. When an earlier gap is the real cause, the tutor goes back and fixes that first.

4

Meet online, on a schedule that fits

Sessions run live over Google Meet or Zoom in a monitored, professional environment. Availability, scheduling and rescheduling are all handled through the student portal.

Choose Your Tutor Level

Three tutor levels so you can match the support to the stakes. A Grade 9 reading gap and a Grade 12 essay deadline are not the same problem.

Built Around the Ontario Curriculum

Our tutors work from the student's own course materials and follow Ontario curriculum expectations for each English course, from ENL1W in Grade 9 to ENG4U in Grade 12. Sessions reinforce what is being taught in class rather than competing with it. Course requirements are set by the Ontario Ministry of Education, so check prerequisites with your school before registering.

Because sessions are fully online, students across Ontario can access the same tutors regardless of where they live.
